Welcome to North Gwent Ramblers website. We are a local walking group that are members of the Ramblers' Association.
And this is where it all began .....
It all started when a leader of a local Air Cadet group decided to start a walking club in the Ebbw Vale area.
Mr Ian Jones ran an outdoor equipment business, and it was in an upstairs room on his premises that the Ebbw Vale & District Walking Club was born.
The first meeting was held in early 1981 with 15 members, enthusiastic walkers from different towns in Blaenau Gwent.
After many months of discussion, when a Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer were appointed it was decided to have our first walk on Sunday, Spring Bank Holiday 1982.
The walk was a great success, and a Walks Programme was planned for every Sunday.
A year or so later the group decided it would be a good idea to join the Ramblers' Association.
There are currently 65 members in our group, 2 of which are original members.
And as of 28.03.25 there were 300 followers on our Facebook page.
In the past we have helped with footpath problems, repaired stiles and organised clean-ups. We all enjoy the interesting and beautiful walks within our area, also many day trips and group holidays.
We have a varied walks programme that includes Leisurely/Easy - not difficult, shorter walks, ideal for beginners, through to Strenuous- more challenging walks, for the experienced walker.
We are situated on the south side of the Brecon Beacons National Park, within travelling distance of the Black Mountains, Usk and Wye Valleys, Western, Eastern and Rhondda Valleys.
